What is hayfever?

Hay fever, or allergic rhinitis, is a condition where your nose or eyes have an allergic reaction to substances called allergens. These allergens can include pollens, dust mites, animal dander, moulds, or other irritants. When exposed to these allergens, your body's immune system reacts, causing swelling and inflammation in the nasal lining, leading to symptoms known as rhinitis.

What are the symptoms of hayfever?
Common symptoms of hay fever include an itchy, runny, or blocked nose, itchy or watery eyes, frequent sneezing, mouth breathing, throat clearing, persistent cold-like symptoms, and snoring during sleep. Less common symptoms may include interrupted sleep, difficulty concentrating, headaches, facial pain, sore throat, reduced sense of smell, sinus infections, and ear infections in children.
What causes hayfever?
Hay fever is typically triggered by exposure to common allergens such as grass, weed, and tree pollens, dust mites, animal fur or dander, moulds, fungal spores, and air pollutants. The specific allergens and their impact can vary among individuals, and genetic factors can also play a role in determining one's sensitivity to certain triggers.
When should I speak to a doctor for hayfever?
While many people can manage hay fever symptoms on their own, it is advisable to consult a doctor if symptoms persist for at least four days a week over four weeks or more, or if they are moderate to severe, interfering with sleep and daily activities. A doctor can assess your symptoms, investigate possible triggers, and suggest treatment options or lifestyle adjustments to help manage or avoid hay fever in the future. Medical guidance is especially important if your symptoms significantly impact your quality of life.
